US Marines Deploy to Baltic Sea for Undersea Security
US Marines Deploy to Baltic Sea for Undersea Security 🇺🇸 🇫🇮 🌊 🛡️ Approximately four dozen U.S. Marines from the 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, have been redirected from existing operational commitments in Europe to the Baltic Sea littoral to support NATO’s maritime security operation, Baltic Sentry. Operating alongside Finland's Coastal Brigade, the specialized detachment is tasked with providing expeditionary surveillance and tactical reconnaissance to defend regional waterways and critical undersea infrastructure, including telecommunication fiber lines and energy conduits. The reconnaissance teams will deploy small unmanned aerial systems (sUAS) and coastal sensor networks to feed intelligence directly into NATO’s shared common operational picture. The deployment operates under Allied Joint Force Command Brunssum and Allied Maritime Command, with the U.S. Marine Corps providing specialized support to European-led forces. "Working side by side with our Finnish allies strengthens our collective readiness, ensuring we can operate seamlessly as a cohesive, lethal team to deter hybrid threats in the Baltic littoral," stated Marine Corps Maj. Gen. Daniel Shipley, commander of U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Europe and Africa.
